Joanna Bourne~~4 1/2 and 5 Star Reviews
Thomas Paxton, an assassin for the British Secret Service, becomes reunited with a young woman from his past, a fellow trainee at a school for sleeper spies in France. Living under the assumed name of Camille Leyland in England, she reveals herself to protect her family from a fanatical French Revolutionary. They never forgot each other, the bonds formed during their childhood turning into a passionate love that makes them more than willing to risk everything for each other.
Joanna Bourne’s writing in this historical romance is crisp, elegant, and beautifully descriptive. The espionage is well written, tautly suspenseful. Cami is an unusual young woman with phenomenal survival skills and a pragmatic approach to life. Pax is lethal and fierce but has a gentle, sensitive soul that the reader will find appealing. Their relationship has a passionate chemistry that moves the story along effortlessly.
This novel has a distinctive feel, equally romance and espionage thriller, authentic in both ways. The reader will be kept on the edge until the very end as the dangerous spy game plays out, and they will wish for Cami and Pax to find the happy ending together they deserve, despite their lethal circumstances.
