Sixteen years ago, Shawn Lowe's parents were killed by Laurence Lauderdale. Now Shawn is finally in a position to take his revenge. The resistance movement he works with needs to kidnap Lauderdale's daughter, Dr. Kayleigh Lauderdale, for the scientific information she may have that could save lives. Shawn is selected to kidnap her, but his colleagues don’t know that  he’s taking her for himself.

Kayleigh lives an insular life with her computers, trying to solve blood mysteries. When she takes a rare break from the lab with her bodyguard, she does not expect a sizzling sexual encounter with him, and she certainly does not expect to be drugged and kidnapped! Shawn becomes cruel as he handcuffs her in a dark ruin in the lower reaches of New Seattle. At a painful cost, she frees herself, but freeing herself of Shawn is much more difficult, as the world around them is more dangerous than her kidnapper.

Karina Cooper's latest Dark Mission novel can be read alone, but benefits greatly from the other tales in the series. This complex and dark tale is a pulse‑pounding ride through a damaged future Seattle, with fantastic characters and a brilliant plot.

Simon Wells has been working on solving the mysteries of the Mission with a very personal reason: He hopes to save his own life. His work is becoming increasingly dangerous, as an ominous power shift is happening. Some of the answers lie with Mission director Parker Adams, who does not understand that her own increasing questions are putting her in danger.

Parker isn’t happy with the Sector Three plants among her agents, which distract her from the real enemy--witches. When she catches Simon breaking into her apartment, she has no idea that she’s entering an odyssey that will turn her life upside down and throw her into the company of a man she cannot trust.

Karina Cooper’s latest “Dark Mission” novel continues an intricate series with multiple plot lines. While determined readers can make this stand-alone read, it ends on an excruciating cliffhanger. This wholeseries is an exhilarating thrill ride, but the next tale cannot come soon enough.

In this launch tale in the “St. Croix Chronicles,” readers meet Cherry St. Croix, a cash poor heiress living in London. This is not the London of the history books--this late Victorian London has come up with a unique solution to the miasma of coal smoke draping the city. Thanks to scientists' innovations, London is on stilts with the poor left to choke in the smoke left below. Cherry lives her life in both parts of London. As her chaperone does her best to get her accepted in proper circles and find her a prospective groom, Cherry, who has no interest in matrimony, has a job down below.

Her parents died when she was young, leading to time spent in orphanages and a life of crime. By the time her guardian finds her, her hard life has left an indelible mark on her. Now she uses her skills as a "collector" to tide her over until her next quarterly allowance is paid out. But she’s about to go on an adventure that will push her skills to the limit and turn her world inside out.

Karina Cooper's new steam punk series' setting has the same above/below dynamic as her "Dark Mission" series, but otherwise this tale is utterly fresh. Some may not be entirely comfortable with Cherry, who is an unrepentant opium addict, and she takes some foolish risks, but by the time readers make it to the unbearably tense climax, they will be hooked.

As this tale opens, Julia Carpenter has found Caleb Leigh with the intention of killing him. He destroyed her coven, and now that her sister is missing, the coven was the only family she had left. With Caleb injured, she calls for any remaining coven members, but those who come do not have good intentions.

Caleb has done many morally ambiguous things, but it's always been done in the name of protecting others, most particularly his sister Jessie. But he did kill Julia's sister, and is very hard and brusque with her... when they're not having sex. This near‑future world is a harsh and dangerous place where witches like Caleb and Julia are hunted, and those without wealth and privilege are condemned to live in the ruins that are what remains of Seattle before the massive earthquakes that transformed the world. Julia and Caleb face grave dangers from the city itself and from those who hunt them in an unimaginable conspiracy.

Karina Cooper's latest can stand alone, but characters from prior tales are inextricably linked to the current tale. Readers who have followed the whole series will get the most out of this intensely dark and visceral story. The revelations are shocking, and readers will suffer along with the characters as they careen to the climax.

Naomi West is a Missionary, and although she works for the Church, her job isn't what most would picture with that word. She is a witch hunter for the Church, and she prides herself on her assassin's skills. This time she is in pursuit of a rogue Missionary, and this mission takes her to a fancy spa for the mega‑rich, a foreign world for most in New Seattle.

Naomi's past has served to make her bitter and angry, and that past gives her a severe aversion to the pampering processes involved in the spa experience. She just wants to kill her target and get out.  No sooner does she walk through the door than someone sabotages a sauna, nearly killing the grandmother of a powerful bishop. Does Naomi have more than one target? And then there's Phin Clarke, son of the owners, unbearably hot and more complex than he seems‑‑because he and his mothers have an Underground Railroad of sorts for witches.

This is the second tale in Karina Cooper's "Dark Mission" series, but new readers won't be lost. Her formidable heroine and uniquely well‑adjusted hero (for this genre) will keep readers riveted to this unique futuristic tale that has both marvelously complex characters and breathtaking, kick‑butt action.
