****1/2

Rowan James has spent the last six years staying as far away as possible from Salem, Massachusetts. But now she has returned, and it was too late for her beloved Nana, who was murdered. Rowan knows now is the time to eliminate the threat of the demon Mallick, and it is time to reunite the James witches in Salem, whether she likes it or not.

Rowan has a surprising ally. When the fallen Seraphim Azaiel walks into The Black Caldron, Rowan believes he's the enemy at first. He claims to be a friend of her Nana, but he’s not forthcoming on the facts. What he doesn’t tell her is that he (and Nana) are part of the League of Guardians, a group of humans and paranormals who fight evil. If Rowan is to keep herself and her family safe, they have a tough battle ahead.

Juliana Stone's latest is more about character than action, though there are plenty of exciting and tense battles. This tale stands alone, and paranormal fans should enjoy this whether they’ve read other tales in the "League of Guardians" series or not.
