Laura Anne Gilman
Bonita Torres works for Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations (PUPI) in New York City. She and the rest of her team of Talent work under their bosses, Ian Stosser and Ben Venec, independent of the magical Council and the Fatae (magical species). PUPI has been called to investigate the attempted rape of a young woman. Her protector, a unicorn‑like creature called a ki‑rin, murdered one of her two assailants.
The whole incident sounds cut and dried, but it's not. It has stirred up anti‑fatae sentiment in the magical community, and PUPI's simple assignment is getting complicated very quickly. Bonnie must wrestle with the many changes in the case, as well as the burgeoning developments in her own magic, while trying not to get sidetracked by her inconvenient attraction to Venec.
As this is the second book in a series that is, in turn, a spin-off of an earlier series, there is an established magical structure and a considerable cast of characters. New readers may spend the early chapters scrambling to acclimate, but by the time the last page is turned, those readers will be seeking out Laura Anne Gilman's backlist. Bonnie's snappy first‑person narrative is occasionally interspersed with short, third‑person sections from other points of view.
