Interview with Peggy Jaeger

Peggy Jaeger writes about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them.

Family and food play huge roles in Peggy’s stories. She believes there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, Peggy brings all aspects of living into her books: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after.

When did you start writing and why?

I can’t remember a time I didn’t write. I’ve been a life-long diarist – always had one of those little pink books with the key to lock it so no one would read my secret thoughts. I would have to say I was in my teens before the fiction writing bug infected me. And I’m a looooooong way from my teens today, so….

What have you learned about writing since you started?

That it gives me more joy than I ever would have guessed. When I worked full time and wrote sporadically I was forever feeling unfulfilled. In 2015, when I retired and started writing full time every day, I will honestly admit my happiness factor has been turned to 11 and has stayed there ( Any Spinal Tap fans out there? 11?)

Tell us about your new book or series.

THE WILL COOK FOR LOVE series from Kensington/Lyrical Shine debuted in April of 2017 with COOKING WITH KANDY, and my newest addition A SHOT AT LOVE debuts on 10.3.17. In the first book I introduced Kandy Laine, the oldest of 7 sisters. Kandy is a chef-lebrity and run a multimillion dollar food empire. But someone is stalking her and trying their darndest to hurt her. Enter Joshua Keane, former NYC police and now private investigator/bodyguard. You can see where this is going!! Books 2-7 all deal with Kandy’s sisters and other family members (including her mom!) and the loves they find for their own HEAs.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

Truly, right now!! I’m sitting in my pajamas and it’s noon. No makeup, hair in a messy bun, feet in my cat slippers, glasses on so I can read. I’m in my newly refurbished office in the attic/loft of my home, overlooking my woods through the window as I write this. The trees and flowers are in bloom, the window is open so I can hear the birds and squirrels and other woodland animals scurrying about. I’ve got a bottle of Diet Mountain Dew chilling next to me and I’m working on making two people fall in love. What could be more perfect?!

Do you have any hobbies?

I’m a big crafter. My husband says that just means I have too much time on my hands!! I paint, I restore old steamer trunks, and I make greeting cards. Sorry, Hallmark, but you haven’t seen me darken your doors in 10 years!

What is the worst thing about being an author?

The only negative thing I can offer is the fact that I have to do so much publicity on my own. Until I had my first book published I’d never sent a tweet, rarely shared anything, and had no website. In the span of 2 months I started a blog, began tweeting, joined Tumblr, Triberr, Goodreads, Facebook and the Lord only knows how many other social media sites just so I could jump on the promotion bandwagon. I don’t like self promotion as a rule. I’d much rather be writing my stories than tweeting about them. Maybe one day when I’m more well-known I can hire an assistant to do all that, but for now, I devote almost 2 hours daily to keeping up with all the sites, and that’s 2 hours I really would like to spend writing romance.

What is your favorite thing about being an author?

Everything else!!!! But really, helping two people find their own HEA is such a joy.

How many books do you currently have out on the market and what genres do they fall into?

As of October 3, I will have 9. The 10th gets “born” on April 4, 2018, book 3 in The WILL COOK FOR LOVE Series, CAN’T STAND THE HEAT

What can we expect from you next?

I’m attending Fiction Fest in Connecticut in September, then the Fall in Love with New England Readers and Writers Conference in October. Hopefully, by then I’ll know when the other 4 books in the “Cooking” series will be released.

Pass on some words of wisdom, please, to aspiring authors.

Writing can be an isolating, emotionally draining endeavor. We sit, alone, for countless hours creating our perfect worlds. Don’t forget to take time for YOU. Call a friend and go to Panera for lunch, or catch a movie in an actual movie theater. Take a walk and get outside for some fresh air – it’s amazing how changing your own scene can stimulate the creative thought process. Take care of yourself, because if you don’t, the world will never get to read your amazing stories.
